Nueva Vida will use new funds to support the program Nueva Vida, Nueva Esperanza (New Life, New Hope) the first program of its kind to support a medically underserved heterogeneous Latina immigrant group with metastatic breast cancer (MBC). The overall goal of Nueva Vida, Nueva Esperanza is to provide a more detailed understanding of the specific psychosocial, logistic and health care system barriers to treatment and improve quality of life for Latinas with MBC and their caregivers through a program designed with and for this medically underserved population.

New York, NY – October 13, 2016 – Today, Nueva Vida received a $50,000 grant from the Avon-Pfizer Metastatic Breast Cancer Grants Program: Identify-Amplify-Unify. In total, 22 non-profit organizations received grants totaling $1 million in funding to support and educate metastatic breast cancer patients, their caregivers and their communities.

The 22 grantee organizations will receive grants ranging from $25,000 to $75,000, to:

  • Address gaps in services for the metastatic breast cancer community, including medical, psychological, nutritional, complementary and integrative services, support, financial, and legal support.

  • Distribute resources and services available to vulnerable populations, including through telemedicine.

  • Share educational resources with the public focusing on metastatic disease, palliative care, treatment options, clinical trials, access to holistic medication, and complementary medicine.

Specifically, Nueva Vida, Nueva Esperanza is designed to (1) improve quality of life for Latinas with MBC and their caregivers who often face unique challenges, (2) increase access to services and culturally proficient (e.g. interpretation, internal referrals) resources through patient navigation, and (3) provide bilingual low-literacy educational materials to increase and foster knowledge specific to MBC. The project will utilize Nueva Vida’s effective best practices including three independent but seamless services that connect clients holistically from beginning to end: Outreach & Education, Patient Navigation, & Mental Health Support.

“This is a unique opportunity for Latinas with MBC and their caregivers to participate in a program activity and subsequently have a clearer understanding of the disease itself and its implications; so they may be fully educated in decision making and treatment options to improve their quality of life and the quality of life of their caregivers and families,” said Nueva Vida’s Executive Director, Astrid Jimenez.

The Avon-Pfizer Metastatic Breast Cancer Grants Program was created in June 2014 to support advocacy, academic and other nonprofit organizations that provide information and services to help people with metastatic breast cancer navigate the medical and emotional challenges associated with their disease. To date, the partners have invested $2 million towards this goal. The first class of grantees announced last year helped more than 32,800 individuals through efforts including nutrition counseling, patient navigation, education and complementary care. Nearly 230 caregivers also benefitted from grantee initiatives, and many more families and community members were supported by this work. In addition, some programs included online content, reaching more than 14 million people with information on metastatic breast cancer.
